Live like a Steamboat Local

“Locals Only”

So you’ve been to The ‘Boat in Winter, and have discovered the beauty of the area during the Summer, but what about the rest of the year? Steamboat breathes in and out, dare we say, in a different way than any other ski town. We believe some of the true luster of this place really comes out when nearly no one is here to experience it. For those who don’t know, Steamboat’s year-round population is only about 12,000, but we see the town surge to host nearly 100,000 visitors for the winter ski season. What does this mean? Think about the return of free spiritedness, being surrounded by openness, and hearing only the sound of the seasons changing.

For some of us, the only time of year open for travel is that of the “shoulder season”, when tourism is at a minimum and businesses around town all start regroup for the next wave of visitors. The best part about this season is the freedom it offers to the year-round residents, oh and did we mention the sweet, sweet discounts available all around town?

Every year the town puts on an event for all who wish to dress up in their scariest costumes and stroll downtown to kick off the Halloween celebration. From roughly 5:00 – 7:00 in the evening expect to see Lincoln Avenue flooded with Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins of all ages. Once the kids have had their fill of candy and have crashed from the inevitable sugar rush, keep the party going all night as the scene in downtown Steamboat Springs is at its fall finest. Monday October 31st

Warren Miller Movie at The Chief Theater

For those who don’t know, when it comes to ski and snowboard flicks, Warren Miller is king. Every year from 1950 to 2004 he released a new film documenting the progression of the sports. Though not directed or produced by them man himself, films after 2004 still bear the Warren Miller name as tribute to his past works. He is still going strong at the age of 91 and, although retired from filmmaking, plans to publish a book in the very near future. Come Downtown to the Historic Chief Theater on Lincoln Ave and see what his work has inspired. If nothing else, join us for an opportunity to get even more excited about the upcoming winter. Weekend of Thursday, November 17th– Saturday, November 19th

Scholarship Day

Every year since the 1991/1992 ski season, a special day has been designated for the local youth ski program, winter sports club. This is opening day with an ulterior motive. 100% of proceeds from lift ticket sales (usually around $30) for this particular day go to supporting the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Get your skis tuned and get ready to rip down the mountain for a good cause. Wednesday, November 23rd

Typically, “Turkey Day” also marks the beginning of our ski season here at Steamboat, once the weather has transitioned from warm summer evenings to cold nights, perfect for making snow. Expect to hear the droning of snow guns around this time of year, and expect some of the most fun to be had on the mountain at Steamboat. The first true day of the ski season, open to pass-holders, can also boast surprisingly great conditions. Don’t shy away from town if you’re planning to ski the following weekend. Expect minimal to no lines, and some great early season skiing or snowboarding. Thursday, November 24th
