Shedding Skis for Wheels: Steamboat Transforms into Bike Town USA
Steamboat Springs is not only known for our world renowned first class skiing, we are also known as Bike Town USA. Even though we are located in the mountains, this town is extremely bike friendly. Instead of piling into the car to go grab dinner at one of our fabulous restaurants, you can hop on your cruiser bike and ride the Yampa River Core Trail. If you are more into the extreme you can enjoy some downhill thrills at Steamboat Bike Park or ride some smooth single-track on our extensive trail network. This charming town has something for everyone on 2 wheels!
The town of Steamboat Springs has taken the initiative to become the destination for all cycling experience. Bike Town USA Initiative is made up of a pair director and an all-volunteer board of directors. They have not only made the town of Steamboat Springs a safer place to ride they promote and host the annual Steamboat Bike Week. This is a fun week in mid-June where you can spend the days outside doing what you love best under the bluebird skis of Steamboat You can also take a tour of the locally owned MOOTS factory, where they make some of the best bikes you can buy. If you care one of the many thrill seekers that enjoys going fast, you should check out our downhill options. When all the snow melts on Mount Werner it becomes Steamboat Bike Park. This park features 50 miles of downhill and biking terrain for all ability levels. The expert trails feature step down rollers, wooden berm/wall ride, large dirt berms, ten-foot wooden ladder step down, step up rollers and a line of nine table-top dirt jumps in rapid succession. The green trails feature dirt berms, banked turns and wooden slat and ladder bridges. You will need to pick up a ticket at the Steamboat Bike Shop or the Steamboat Summer Ticket Office.
Another fun way to get out there and ride is road biking. This is a great way to improve your health and fitness, meet new people while absorbing the breathtaking valley views. When road biking in Steamboat you can get onto our smooth country roads within minutes and be treated to some of the best road biking loops of any distance.
To attest to the variety of terrain in and just outside Steamboat, The town has been a welcome host to the USA Pro Challenge race series for several years. Spectators can see the best in road biking compete in multiple stages of the event. We are hoping for the series return in years to come, but that doesn’t mean you can’t trace your favorite rider’s tracks in the meantime!
